在逆向工程的定義中，通常是將物體掃瞄轉換成數位資料(座標點資料)，以複製原
始的原型資料，最常見的就是汽車的油土模型，經逆向工程的作業後，成為3D的
曲面數位資料。簡而言之，逆向工程就是複製目前非經過正向流程：設計；繪圖；
製造而成的產品。

在大自然間，許多的東西都沒有經過設計、繪圖、檢討、修訂尺寸後再製造產生的
，例如：風化後的石頭、動物的體型、人體的骨骼等等。那要複製人體的骨骼，以
供醫療使用，自然是需要經由逆向的方式，先得到人體骨骼的資料，再進行複製處
理。拜目前科技發達之賜，人體的斷層掃瞄(CT或是MR掃瞄)，已經可以清楚的將
人體內部的結構掃瞄出來，並且清楚的分辨軟、硬組織。

Mimics軟體是介於醫學與機械領域之間的一套逆向軟體。可以將斷層掃瞄的結果，
做轉換成為機械領域中CAD、CAM軟體，可以處理的資料格式，如STL格式以及
NURBS曲線資料。是醫學斷層掃瞄、機械工程的介面軟體。
